Local 7th Grader Launches Free Mini Pantry to Combat
Food Insecurity in Northbrook
November 1, 2024 - Northbrook, IL: The Northbrook Chamber of Commerce & Industry [NCCI] will host a Ribbon Cutting for the new Legacy Pantry at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at 2002 Walters Ave. on the First Street side. Special guests will include U.S. Representative Brad Schneider, State Rep. Tracy Katz-Muhl, and Cook County Commissioner Scott Britton and other local VIPs.
Nathan Metzl, a passionate 7th grader, is addressing food insecurity in Northbrook by establishing Legacy Pantry, a Free Mini Pantry in the community. While visiting Starved Rock State Park this summer, Nathan discovered a Free Mini Pantry in Ottawa, Illinois, which motivated him to take action in his own hometown.
Food insecurity affects many families, with 3.7% of Northbrook residents living below the national poverty level, according to 2023 Census data. While local food pantries provide essential services, they often require applications, have limited hours, and may not be easily accessible to everyone in need.
“I realized that Northbrook did not have a Free Mini Pantry, and I wanted to change that,” Nathan said. “Mini Pantries are a grassroots solution that can help those who fall through the cracks. They allow community members to take what they need and leave what they can, providing food access without barriers.”
Nathan presented his idea at a recent Northbrook Village Board meeting, seeking guidance and support for his pantry. Shortly thereafter, Chamber Board Director Mark DeBartolo, and Executive Director, Kathi Quinn of the Northbrook Chamber of Commerce reached out to Nathan and his family, collaborating on a plan to place the first pantry outside the NCCI office at 2002 Walters Avenue.
The Legacy Pantry operates 24/7, offering essential items like cereal, canned goods, and pasta to families in need. Free Mini Pantries foster a sense of community by allowing neighbors to support one another, and they are already making a positive impact in towns across the country.
Nathan believes that community involvement is crucial for the success of this initiative. “With everyone’s support, we can ensure that those struggling with food insecurity receive the help they need,” he emphasized.
